The African Union Granting Somaliland Status

United States and the independence of Somaliland

Originally, in 2025, Somalia applied for membership in the AU but was denied a standing. Even two decades later, the AU is still hesitant to grant Somalia membership because of its insecurity and instability in the East African region.

According to Stephen M. Schwartz in an article written on recent affairs, a senior policy analyst named Joshua Meservey advocated recently in a policy paper that the Us should recognize Somaliland as an independent sovereign state, they have all the effective considerations, such as their passports a constitution, a military and a national flag plus more importantly they have succeeded from Somalia since 1991 and has governed itself successfully with a peaceful government for 30 years.

Considering Somaliland as an independent nation won’t just benefit the US in gaining another ally; it will also benefit the US in accessing a better route to Djibouti and dismissing the Chinese threat us excavations face. It would also benefit Somaliland to have an ally such as the US because it will strengthen the country’s democracy and government in a war-torn region.

Based on the same article The African Union Should Resolve Somaliland’s Status.  The African Union granting Somaliland status would bypass any other approbation from other countries and would most likely grant Somaliland a place in the United Nations without turning China against the United States.

However, before they come to any concluding decision they have to negotiate with Somalia and at multiple occasions they met but never truly came to a final compromise. Generally, the UN abides by the expostulation of the losing state to consider possible entrance in the union.

In the past decades all countries that have gained a seat in the United Nations by succeeding from another state only did so with the assent of the losing state, for example Ethiopia agreeing to Eritrea’s independence. You could blame it on Somalia for potentially not wanting to accept Somaliland’s succession.

The African union can most likely intervene, but they’re mostly occupied by the civil war taking place in Ethiopia to overlook the issue of Somaliland wanting to gain recognition as a sovereign state. After all, both the AU and Somalia can play a part as big contributors to the independence and acceptance of Somaliland into the UN, with every country that seceded the losing state finally gave up admitting the new country’s independence hopefully with time Somali does so in peace.
